In India, that question has a precise answer, and it is written into the Drone Rules, 2021.
The three things a legal drone flight needs
One: a certified pilot. Commercial drone operation requires a Remote Pilot Certificate (RPC) issued through the DGCA framework, earned at an authorised Remote Pilot Training Organisation after theory, practical flying hours and an examination. It is a personal licence, valid for ten years, tied to the individual at the controls — not to the company, and not to the drone.
Two: a registered aircraft. Every drone must be enrolled on the DigitalSky portal and carry a Unique Identification Number (UIN). An unregistered aircraft is an illegal aircraft, however expensive it was.
Three: cleared airspace. India’s skies are mapped into colour-coded zones. Green zones allow flight up to 400 ft AGL without prior permission. Yellow zones — including the band around airports and any airspace above the green ceiling — require clearance from the relevant air traffic authority. Red zones — international borders, defence installations, strategic infrastructure — are closed to civil operation unless the competent central authority specifically authorises it. Mandatory third-party liability insurance sits on top of all three.
Most institutions discover this hierarchy the hard way: when a security officer walks onto the lawn mid-shoot, or when a campus fifteen kilometres from an airfield turns out to sit under controlled airspace.

Can you fly inside a restricted or sensitive area?
Often, yes — with permission. Restricted and red-zone airspace requires approval from the concerned authority, and we handle that application process on your behalf along with district administration and police intimation. How long does airspace permission take?
